REFLECTION OF LIGHT

When a ray of light approaches a smooth polished surface and the light ray bounces back, it is called the reflection of light.

Incident ray
The ray that is incident on a surface is incident ray.

Reflected ray

The ray that is coming from the surface after reflection is reflected ray.

Normal
If a perpendicular were to be drawn on reflecting surface, it would be called normal.

Angle of incidence
Angle of incidence is the angle between incident ray and the normal.

Angle of reflection
Angle of reflection is the angle between reflected ray and the normal.

LAWS OF REFLECTION

There are two laws of reflection

FIRST LAW OF REFLECTION:

According to the first law of reflection, the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane which is perpendicular to the plane of the reflecting surface.

SECOND LAW OF REFLECTION:

According to the second law of reflection, the angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection for small angles.

The laws of reflection are applicable to spherical mirrors as well.
